I have been very fortunate in my experiences since I came from Scotland 22yrs ago. I have heard and read of pretty negative events but my family and I have received incredible compassion and service over the years. My daughter was critically ill and almost died when she was 3. Two hospitals, lifeflights in a helicopter and ICU. Our case manager told us not to worry about money, just take care of our daughter. Wonderful service from the "horrible insurance people".Thank goodness she made a complete recovery. Here at Blue I think we care for our members in the same way. We have compassion and take the extra step every day.

the graph presenting the answers is nearly impossible to read - a bar chart would be better.

I think this is tough to answer. I can answer for the "health insurance industry" or for a particular company, but each company would have its own personality. Some are "colder" than others. Some are more helpful than others.

If the company is BlueCross Blue Shield, very favorable.

BCBS is pretty much the worst. They don't care about anything except making money. I understand it's a business, but they should at least pretend to care about the people they're covering.

BCBSNC has been pretty good except for my following concerns. First, I don't like decision's being made for me without my input. For example, who's idea was it to eliminate the low deductible of $500.00 and who's idea was it to force Medco on employees? I know and understand this is a business and I know the bottom line is revenue however, employees are customers too.

Cold, calculating, and selfish. Sure, individual people working for the company may be pleasant, and the company is helpful to a point, but only as long as the company is getting what it wants from you, which is a profit. If they don't feel they're making enough of a profit, they become much less helpful.
