Robin, New York City has proposed a ban on the sale of large-sized sodas at restaurants, movie theaters and street cars. To read more about the initiative, check out this New York Times piece. I think people can get what they want and it seems ridiculous to try and control what adults can have. People are allowed to make bad choices.
So what's to stop me from buying two smaller sizes instead? Or sticking a straw in a liter bottle? You can't legislate these kinds of things. It's a personal choice. People will fight it regardless of whether it's being done for the right reason because they see it as an infringement on their ability to choose for themselves. Soda isn't illegal so...
Considering this was still a free country the last time I checked and sodas are not an illegal substance, neither the government nor any other entity needs to dictate whether or not I consume them and in what quantity. That is my own business. It is my own right and my own responsibility to exercise moderation in doing so.
I think it's crazy to try and stop people from drinking too much soda. There's other things our country needs to worry about!
You cannot legislate everything. There are people who work outside in unbearable heat who might just need a "big soda". There are bigger issues that need to be dealth with.
I think the country to work on alcohol consumption and drug abuse both legal drugs and illegal drugs before targetting soft drinks.
Government should not dictate health issues. If you want a big soda and they are not available you could just order two sodas. Education should be the way to affect change.
I don't think it was worth the time and effort. People will continue to do whatever they want. Only by saying you can't have it will they want it more.
Adults will do what ever they want, but i don't feel that children should drink as much sodas as they do.
You have to think logically. People are going to chose whatever beverage they want. The most important thing that you can say is to be careful and work in moderation. If you want a soda, then choose wisely and be careful with how much you drink.
i think we have more important things to legislate before we start legislating the size of a soft drink for sale.
Big sodas are a very small part of the obesity problem in America today. The bigger problems are associated with portion sizes of meals and a sedentary lifestyle. These are choices over which an individual has control. Ordering a diet drink or unsweet tea with a meal of 2,000+ calories will not solve the problem of obesity in America. We all need to get up, get out for some form of exercise, and force ourselves to push away from the table before going back for seconds.
Going after big sodas just doesn't get much traction with me.
It is not the government's responsibility to remedy obesity or smoking, for that matter. It is an individual's free choice (or a parent's for their child). My beef is the fact that I have to subsidize (in the form of upward insurance premiums) poor decisions by other. I am a healthy individual and should be rewarded as such (not just with Blue Points, but thank you for at least that).
It is not government's place to ban soda drinks. People need to learn to take responsibility for themselves!
Whether or not one drinks soda is a personal choice, where accountability and risk assessment come into play. The government should have no jurisdiction over personal choices.
The government should not be involved in our personal choices about food. I believe the government should allow me to choose raw milk if I want to. And so I believe people should be able to choose big sodas if they want. Information is out there, education is available. If people care about their health, they'll make the right choices and changes.
Banning any food product is a hare-brained idea; it is futile and illegitimate in a free society. The so-called obesity epidemic is caused by the historically unprecedented wide availability of food which is a good thing. During all other times of human history, today's overweight people would have been survivors, prepared for famine.
I'm not sure that sodas are truly the problem of obesity in and of themselves. It seems like a step in the right direction, but if an obese person keeps eating cheesburgers and fries every day with a water, I'm afraid they won't be able to really see the difference from droppign the soda.
I think it is wonderful that a ban is being placed, but in reality, do we really believe that because someone says that you can't have something it will be obeyed? It is as always up to the individual to make that change too!
