Is there such a thing as too much treatment? Yes, according to Choosing Wisely®, a physician-led health education campaign. As part of this initiative, leading physician specialty groups have created lists of more than 200 tests and procedures they believe are unnecessary and can even cause more harm than good.1 They include those that expose patients to excessive radiation, those that can lead to excessive discomfort or complications, and some that simply offer no advantages over a doctor’s evaluation.2 Patients contribute to this culture of medical excess by demanding tests and medications from our doctors.3 Overtreatment wastes a whopping $210 billion a year and contributes to runaway health care costs.4,5
