Be Careful about Overpromises

There are an awful lot of advocates for electronic medical records and claims about health savings. In HealthAffairs March 2012, a study called, "Giving Office-Based Physicians Electronic Access To Patients’ Prior Imaging And Lab Results Did Not Deter Ordering Of Tests"

This study shows that electronic health records actually can INCREASE healthcare costs, because it becomes very easy for a physician to order a bunch of tests on the computer rather than through the paper system.

I am not going to advocate a return to paper, but as a doctor trying to tackle healthcare costs, EMRs are neutral at best.

Thanks for sharing that study, Tom. If you see EMRs and EHRs as cost neutral right now, how do you suggest making them more cost efficient?
